Award-winning luxury interior design studio, Tailored Living Interiors, showcases its creativity and design expertise within a large Californian-style beach house in the beautiful coastal village of West Wittering, Sussex.

This 3-bedroom property, which offers direct access to the immaculate sandy beach of West Wittering, has breathtaking views of the Solent and Chichester Harbour.   Benefiting from Tailored Living’s comprehensive interior design service, the homeowners commissioned the company to provide a complete design and project coordination of their luxury home. Gloria Sanchez, founder & managing Director at Tailored Living Interiors explains,

“The property is nestled in the picturesque village of West Wittering and having collaborated with this client 6 years ago on their London home, we were their default choice when selecting an interior designer for this new project.”

tailored Living Sussex by the Sea

When considering the brief and how the project went Gloria explained “Our client brief was to create a relaxed and cohesive beach vibe with an effortless, laid-back luxury feel. Thankfully, the timeline for the execution of this project was perfect because the client had previous experience with how we operate, which meant they understood the importance of the planning process. Duly, we were given 9 months prior to the date they wanted to start building works on this project which allowed ample time to ensure the clients’ requirements, preferences and budgetary constraints were reviewed as many times as required prior to works commencing.”

Discussing any issues or problems that may have arisen during the project Gloria comments, “Despite some initial concerns about managing the interior design project from a geographical distance, the overall process turned out to be smoother than expected. The trust and rapport established early on between the interior designer and contractors significantly contributed to the project’s smooth execution.

“Open lines of communication, mutual understanding, and frequent collaboration fostered a sense of teamwork, despite the physical distance. The constant exchange of ideas, suggestions, and feedback, along with the prompt resolution of any challenges that arose, played a critical role in keeping the project running smoothly.”

This coastal Californian-style home features the following design elements by Tailored Living:

• ENTRYWAY: Upon arrival, you are greeted by a light and airy Californian-style lobby area with Nordic-inspired tones and texture by taking a ‘less is more’ approach. Neutral painted walls lay a foundation throughout the home for the clients chosen accent colour, matt black. A modern black bench seat sits beneath a picture window with made to order African mudcloth geometric print cushions, and jute storage baskets to keep everyday essentials like a picnic blanket (or brolly) neat and tidy.

• DINING AREA: This open-plan dining room offers an alfresco dining experience for up to 8 friends and family, providing instant access to the beach and open-plan kitchen, which features complementary off-white Shaker-style cabinets, grey/black worktops, and tactile rope and metal hardware. The large table seats four on wish-bone style chairs on each side for a clear view of the gardens, as well as keep a free passage around the table when serving guests. To finish, two rattan pendant lights are suspended overhead to provide gentle illumination when dining and draw on the organic materials so true of Californian-style beach house interiors.

• LIVING ROOM: In the main living area, a fabric roll arm Lawson sofa creates the perfect space to relax and unwind, with a turned wood accent table and black metal and rattan wall light that’s ideal when reading or highlighting the framed sea coral prints. Comfort was a key ingredient in the living room, as the cool air from the ocean is inevitable. Plush upholstery combined with a neutral colour palette and raw materials all come together to create a warm, inviting space for the homeowners to enjoy day or night.

• MEZZANINE: Echoing the same clean and pure aesthetic, an intimate mezzanine level provides easy access to the main sleeping quarters, as well as make great use of the sloping ceiling with the addition of extra seating beneath the eaves. Simple yet distinct artwork adorns the walls and yet again embraces the coastal theme with driftwood fish wall art and three frames that form a black and white digital print of a humpback whale. The small oak bench seat is classically timeless and is designed and the bleached strata oak wood flooring is the ultimate finishing touch, helping to create a truly organic feel from a white and wood interior.

  • BEDROOMS: Offering spectacular ocean views from the first floor, each bedroom features a statement wall-hung dressing table, which is suspended from the ceiling to make it look as though it’s floating. The master bedroom features a freestanding four-poster bed, with two guest bedrooms featuring a full-size double in one and a generous single bed in the other. Furniture includes a series of retro rocker-style chairs, bedside units and a chest of drawers

  • WC: Defined by the iconic Beach Huts Nautical wallpaper in Driftwood by Sanderson, this bijoux cloakroom offers the perfect marriage of old and new. The muted vintage backdrop of the British seaside is carried through to the 2-drawer vanity unit in satin grey with white ceramic sink and for contrast, matt black fixtures and fittings finish the look.

The homeowner comments, “The trust and rapport established early on between the interior designer and contractors significantly contributed to the project’s smooth execution. Open lines of communication, mutual understanding, and frequent collaboration fostered a sense of teamwork, despite the physical distance. The constant exchange of ideas, suggestions, and feedback, along with the prompt resolution of any challenges that arose, played a critical role in keeping the project running smoothly.”

CRL Bespoke Shower Screens are making waves in the bathroom this year as Antique Brass mixes classic and modern styles for a versatile finish.

Giving a vintage character to any space, the Antique Brass finish fashioned on hardware on the CRL frameless shower screen collection brings a sense of warmth and personality to an otherwise minimalist space.

WATERTRAIN® is a new flexible kit that speeds up the design process for tap manufacturers, providing all the required pipework for various tap shapes and sizes.

WATERTRAIN® is also pre-approved by IAPM and KIWA, saving manufacturers the time and cost of gaining individual product approvals and offering reassurance on quality.

Watertrain® is a standard polymer waterway that can be installed into taps of any shape or material, and it uses established technology that separates the tap body from water contact, preventing any migration of toxic metals from the faucet body into the drinking water. It provides the tap manufacturer with a safe, hygienic, flexible, and cost-efficient waterway from angle valve to aerator.

The polymer tubes can be cut to length to fit various sized tap bodies giving great flexibility and it enables the manufacturer to keep less stock by standardising components. There is no need for the additional cost of plastic moulding tools, due to the flexibility of the cut-to-length polymer tubes. They are also simple and fast to assemble using snap and push fit connections. This new Watertrain® will work on washbasin, kitchen or touchless taps and with a selection of Neoperl aerators offering optimised performance for stream pattern and flow rate.

Martin Doll, systems category manager at Neoperl said of this innovation “Watertrain® is a self-contained standalone waterway for faucets/taps. It is pre-approved by institutes so our manufacturer customers can use it for any taps that they are producing. They no longer need to seek separate approvals for hygienic drinking water or for the mechanical tests. So, it offers a full-service package for our customers and that’s very attractive. When demonstrated at the ISH trade show the response was tremendous.”

Today, Tom Reynolds, chief executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, outlines the importance of sustainable practices for bathroom manufacturers.

British consumers are increasingly showing a heightened environmental consciousness, as evidenced by supermarkets abandoning plastic packaging and the fashion industry favouring longer-lasting products rather than ‘fast fashion’. In line with these positive developments, examining the environmental impact of furnishings and decor within bathroom projects and exploring how we can mitigate it more effectively is essential.

Fortunately, making sustainable choices in bathroom design is simpler than you might imagine. When considering products made from wood or board, such as vanity units, fitted furniture and wall panels, it is highly recommended to prioritise items crafted from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber and board.

I recently spoke with Rosie Teasdale, executive director of the FSC, as part of the BMA’s Sustainability Forum, which took place during the InstallerSHOW 2023 event. She explained that their independent endorsement verifies ethical and sustainable sourcing practices for wood-based products, ranging from paper to timber. By opting for FSC-certified goods and products made with certified materials, you can be confident that your purchase was manufactured responsibly and ethically, with due consideration for people, wildlife, and the environment.

The significance of choosing FSC-certified products for your bathroom design cannot be overstated. Without it, verifying whether a product has been created using timber sourced from well-managed and ethically operated forests is impossible.

However, opting for products that utilise FSC-certified supplies offers several advantages. Not only does it help reduce our carbon footprint, it indicates a company’s commitment to responsible sourcing, often translating to greater care in their production processes. Consequently, the result is higher-quality pieces that boast increased durability.

As bathrooms become more compact, the demand for bathroom furniture is rising, driven by the need for efficient storage solutions. Finding bathroom furniture made with FSC-certified materials is readily achievable, as numerous retailers offer a wide range of furniture styles and finishes, often accompanied by lifetime guarantees.

Another noteworthy trend is the growing use of wall panels and coverings as an alternative to traditional ceramic tiles. The extensive range of finishes, combined with the ease and speed of installation, contributes to their popularity. Moreover, these wall panels are more easily recyclable at the end of their lifespan and, with no grouting, are easier to clean and maintain.

Therefore, if you seek an eco-friendly approach to your bathroom designs while still enjoying premium furniture and wall panels that stand the test of time, you must ensure that the products you choose are produced using FSC-certified materials.

Responding to the news that water bills are set to get the most considerable increase in almost 20 years from April, the Unified Water Label Association (UWLA) targets consumers with a ‘USE LESS – USE THE LABEL’ campaign.

Yvonne Orgill, MD at the UWLA, says, “Given the current cost of living crisis, this proposed increase in annual bills, taking an annual water bill for an average household in England and Wales to £448, will have a big impact on households.”

“We want to help households make informed choices over their use of water in the home and encourage them to seek out products that carry the Unified Water Label.  We are fortunate in that manufacturers have introduced innovative products that provide the opportunity to use less water, without compromising on functionality.  With more and more companies coming on board to support the Unified Water Label, and promote these products, it is easier than ever to find them.  The information provided on the Unified Water Label can help consumers make informed choices when it comes to selecting new, or upgrading existing water using products, in the home.

“The UWLA website has a wealth of information which is easy for consumers to access. There is an extensive directory of products to help find water-efficient products that meet different household needs.

“Just a few changes can make a significant impact. For example, old water guzzling WC’s, could be wasting around 4 billion litres of water per year. Homes that upgrade to a modern WC could immediately make a significant saving in water usage. Toilet flushing is one of the easiest ways to save water in the home. Modern dual-flush cistern WC’s are readily available. There are more than 3,000 WC’s that carry the Unified Water Label listed on the UWLA website.

“Another product switch that could have an immediate impact is the shower. Typically a shower may be using 12 litres a minute, research shows that a typical shower time is 7 minutes; giving a total of 84 litres used by just the one shower. Choosing a state-of-the-art shower that uses 10 litres a minute, or a recirculating shower that may use as little as 2.5 litres per minute, can reduce this total significantly. In addition, spending less time in the shower, say 4 minutes, can further reduce usage. A 4 minute shower using 10 litres per minute equates to only 40 litre, less than half of the 84 litres of the current typical shower and less than a third of the daily target of 125 litres per person.

“We urge our members, partners and supporters to work with us to help promote our message ‘USE THE LABEL – USE LESS’ – visit the UWLA website to find out how you can help – www.uwla.eu.”

Made Smarter has launched a whitepaper to help SME manufacturers in the furniture industry accelerate their net zero plans.

Decarbonisation through Digitalisation: manufacturing made smarter and greener with technology’ is a practical guide to industry’s biggest challenge and opportunity.

The free-to-download document from the government-backed and industry-led technology adoption programme, aims to simplify a complex and fast-evolving topic by demystifying some of the terminology and analysing the latest research.

The whitepaper offers insights about how various technologies enable manufacturing and engineering businesses to make things smarter and greener while powering growth and creating new highly skilled jobs.

The whitepaper showcases makers who have started their decarbonisation journeys with Made Smarter, including Crystal Doors In Rochdale.

It also signposts manufacturers to other initiatives, including Race to Zero, a campaign led by the United Nations, and the SME Climate Hub, a non-profit global initiative that empowers companies with tips and tools, including its Business Carbon Calculator.

Donna Edwards, director of Made Smarter’s North West Adoption Programme, said: “Manufacturing is vital to the UK economy and our daily lives. But it also has a colossal impact on our environment.

“The pressure and scrutiny on the sector to be more sustainable is ramping up, and coming from all directions. It is our biggest challenge, but it is also a significant opportunity.

“Decarbonisation is not a distraction. It is an imperative. Talk needs to stop and make way for action and a concerted commitment to change. UK manufacturing must get behind the mantra that the future is decarbonised and digital.

“Made Smarter is committed to help small and medium sized makers get there with vision, technology, leadership and collaboration. Our hope is that our ‘Decarbonisation through Digitalisation’ whitepaper will become a valuable part of any manufacturer’s toolkit to support their net zero journey.”

Over the last four years, Made Smarter has provided impartial, tailored and expert advice to thousands of manufacturers of every size and shape, and from every sector.

Digital transformation workshops offer practical steps towards digitisation and a clear digital roadmap to follow. There is also funding to help SMEs invest in technology and a variety of support to enable businesses to adapt to the green skills and digital leadership a net zero future demands.

Donna Edwards added: “In recent years we’ve seen technology play an incredibly important part in tackling disruptive and emerging challenges. It has helped businesses navigate the Covid-19 pandemic and recover, negotiate supply chain disruption and labour shortages, as well as focus on solutions to mitigate the energy crisis.

“For the climate emergency, digitalisation offers manufacturers a huge opportunity to deliver operational efficiencies, decarbonise heat and power, optimise design and materials, and improve logistics and transport, benefitting their business, their bottom line and the environment. Then there is the reputational gain which helps secure customer loyalty, as well as attract new talent and investment.

“While decarbonisation might feel overwhelming, and it is by no means a simple task, it is vital manufacturers recognise they are not alone. Combating climate change demands collaboration, and that is exactly what Made Smarter is here for.”

If you were ever to describe a bathroom as cool, this is the epitome, with an added dash of attitude, lots of audacity, and a hint of romance.

When the singer-songwriter Mads Langer, and his wife, top model Julie Lillelund decided to create their dream bathroom, they were looking to merge the unconventional and free-spirited style of bohemian decor with the more edgy, innovative artistic and daring of the avant-garde. Thus, creating their ‘rock-star bathroom’; which is eclectic and decadent, luxurious but practical, fashion-focused yet cosy. This bold-as-brass bathroom is completely unique, and it’s in the brass section where Unidrain plays a leading role.

In 2020 when Mads and Julie moved into their house, they were determined to create a huge bathroom. They assessed the space, and after reallocating several rooms, they converted one of the first-floor bedrooms into what is now their bathroom.

This stunning space is everything they wanted, from the large blue freestanding bathtub, lavender-coloured floor tiles, imposing chandelier, pink sofa, and floral wallpaper to matching curtains. The colour palette and furnishings in the room are all brought into harmonious alignment with the stylish curation of their own beautiful vintage accessories and the well-executed brass detailing.

The couple were involved in all aspects of the bathroom’s interior; their passion for vintage design and choice of products reveals their sureness of style and talent for combining trends, tone, and texture.

The couple are certainly unafraid to challenge design norms and Scandinavian aesthetics: there’s something of Victorian nobility and a hint of French rococo within this bathroom – but the style defies decoding – it’s all their own! However, one thing is certain, your senses are awakened when you enter this room.

Room for all the family in the deluxe shower zone …

The attention to detail came into play with the inclusion of the exclusive brass elements by Unidrain, with their heritage in Danish design they were the ideal solution for the custom-made drain that spans two showers in length. The stylish toilet roll holder and toilet brush are all from Unidrain’s Reframe Collection and their immersion within the design helps to create both a visual balance and continuity in dialogue with the other brass items in the bathroom

Many people – like Mads Langer and Julie Lillelund – have very specific interior design ideas, and it’s often difficult to make these work with standard products. Especially when dealing with family-sized solutions, in such instances extra-long drains bespoke drains are produced to order and they are especially popular. Two drains are combined to form one unit and then one of Unidrain’s grating or panel designs is selected to add to the stylish finish.

If you are looking for what amounts to a bespoke drain then Unidrain’s modular line drain system is a perfect option as it enables the consumer to obtain a solution that deviates from standard dimensions, allowing them to create room for the whole family. It is also perfectly suited for dressing rooms and large bathrooms and can be
finished using any of Unidrain’s designs.
