The PLATES residential building in a quiet Tokyo neighbourhood combines Zen-inspired design with modern architecture. Designed by Kazutoshi Imanaga of Imanaga Environmental Planning Office, the four-storey structure merges contemporary form with natural elements. Native cypress wood, stone, and plaster create a tranquil atmosphere, while two Zen gardens bridge the gap between the urban environment and nature.
The bathroom spaces, designed by Coichi Wada of STUDIO KAZ, follow the building’s minimalist approach, balancing aesthetic simplicity with practical design. The DuraSquare above-counter basin sits on a natural stone console, seamlessly blending into the interior. In the laundry room, the Starck 3 built-in washbasin continues the design theme, offering elegance and functionality.
The building’s architecture, with expansive glass windows, allows natural light to flood the interiors, while the Zen gardens offer a visual and emotional connection to the outdoors. This fluid transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces invites a sense of tranquillity, embodying the essence of Japanese design.
PLATES is a celebration of sustainable, locally sourced materials, where the beauty of Japanese cypress wood is highlighted throughout, offering a warm, inviting ambience. The pared-down colour palette, contrasting natural black stone and white plaster, complements the tranquil atmosphere.
